Having spent so much time at home over the last couple of years with pandemic and all, we have accustomed to lots of new habits, and found new ways and places to exercise. Perhaps your exercise or meditation schedule includes yoga.
According to a survey conducted by the Yoga Journal in 2016, around 37% of yogis practise at home, while 44% practise in a studio or gym. The remaining 19% practise both at home and in a studio. This shows that while a significant number of people prefer to practise in a studio, there is still a large percentage of people who choose to practise at home.
The experience of practising yoga in the studio is very different to home. You do not get to experience the vibe of the room, breathe together with the other yogis, or you cannot get the physical modifications that you missed during covid from your yoga teacher. However, it seems that people actually prefer to practise at home. It is way more convenient. When you practise at home, you do not have to worry about travelling to the studio or the gym, which can be time-consuming and costly. You can also fit your yoga practise around your schedule, whether that's early in the morning, late at night, or any other time that suits you. This makes it easier to stay consistent and commit to a regular yoga practise. as you can do it whenever you have time.
There is another benefit to practising yoga at home. You can control your practise a lot more, and have less distractions. You can practise at your level, your pace and focus on your own challenges. In the studio, our own ego comes often on our way, you may feel pressured to keep up with the other students or the teacher, adding stress to your practise. Whilst at home, you can dedicate all your time and focus on your own practise, without having to worry about other people and what they are doing.
For beginners this can be particularly beneficial, as you can go at your own pace and take breaks whenever and however long they need.
Another thing is the cost. Yoga has become quite expensive, and practising yoga at home is more affordable. While some studios offer affordable rates, others can be very expensive, especially if you have a regular practise. At home, all you need is a mat, some space and comfortable clothes, making it an affordable option to practise at home.
How easy it is to actually practise at home? The answer is super easy. Decide on a space to roll out your mat to and you are ready to go. There are plenty of videos on YouTube or the internet, on-demand courses from many yoga teachers and apps that guide you through a yoga practise. You can also create your own routine or a flow, based on the poses and sequences that you enjoy. Mix and match as you like, moving to the music you like.
In conclusion, it seems like people not only like to practise at home, but prefer to. At home, you can control your practise more, and stay committed to consistent yoga routine.
Where do you practise? Where do you think it more luxury to practise, at home or in the studio?
